How to use logo references

The point of a logo library is not to pick something pretty. It is to avoid what already exists. Four steps get you to a direction in about an hour.

1. Shape first: is your motif already common?

Look up your motif (a mountain, a drop, the letter M) in Logobook. It shows marks in black and white, so you compare shape without being swayed by color. If dozens look alike, the motif is crowded: drop it, or change one of angle, weight or spacing by a lot.

2. Learn your industry's habits, then decide

Filter Logggos and Logosystem by industry to see the usual colors and type. Following the convention tells people what kind of business you are; breaking it helps them remember which one. Decide which matters more right now.

3. Symbol or wordmark

A short, easy name works as a wordmark. A long name, or one used across languages, needs a symbol. Test it at profile-picture size, around 40 pixels wide. If it is unreadable there, remove detail.

4. Color and type last

Add color only after the shape works in black and white. Pick the logo color with matching background and text colors in the palette tool, and choose a typeface whose license explicitly allows logo use.

Check before you use it

Looking different is not the same as being registrable

Not finding a similar logo on a reference site does not clear a trademark. Rights generally go to whoever filed first in the same class of goods or services. Search the name and the device separately in your trademark office's database: KIPRIS for Korea, USPTO for the United States, J-PlatPat for Japan, and the WIPO Global Brand Database for a first pass across countries. When results are unclear, ask a trademark attorney. This page is not legal advice.

We do not reproduce logo artwork

Logos on reference sites are trademarks and copyrighted works of their owners. Do not download them into your drafts or trace them. For the same reason this page lists links and descriptions only. What you can study is structure: stroke ratios, spacing, and how symbol and wordmark sit together.

AI-generated logos

Image generators can produce marks that resemble existing trademarks, and in some countries the output may not be protected by copyright. Use them to explore, redraw the final mark yourself, and run the trademark search above.

FAQ

Why are there no logo images here?

Logos are trademarks and copyrighted works of their owners, so we do not reproduce them. This page gives names, descriptions and links; view the logos on each site.

If a logo is not on a reference site, is it safe to use?

No. Reference sites hold a selection only. Search your name and device in a trademark database for your class of goods or services, and ask a trademark attorney when the result is unclear.

Can I build a logo from a free font?

It depends on the font. Some free fonts do not allow logo use. Read the license text from the font's publisher before you use it in a mark.

Is there a tool here that makes the logo?

This list is for reference and checking. To set a direction you can use the moodboard maker and the color palette generator on this site.
