How to make a moodboard
- Tap “Add images” or drop photos onto the board. Screenshots go straight in with paste (Ctrl+V).
- “Justified rows” fills the board while keeping each photo's proportions; “Grid” splits it into equal cells. Then drag photos to move them and drag the dot at the bottom right to resize.
- “Extract colors” pulls six representative colors from your photos. Tap a color to copy its code, or “Add to board” to place swatches along the bottom.
- Add a title or keywords with “Add text”, then “Save PNG”. The image is 2,400 pixels on its long side with no watermark.
What is a moodboard?
A moodboard gathers the feel of what you are about to make (photos, colors and a few words) on one sheet. “Warm and calm” means something different to everyone, but six photos and six colors side by side make people see the same thing. It is used to agree on direction before logo, interior, shoot, wedding or brand work begins.
Moodboard vs. collage
A collage is a finished picture; a moodboard is a decision aid. That is why it carries swatches and keywords as well as photos, and why you choose images that argue for a direction rather than ones that merely look nice.
What makes a good one
- Six to twelve photos. More than that blurs the direction. If you hesitate over a photo, leave it out.
- Pick one hero image. Make the photo that best represents the mood the largest. With three or five photos, “Grid” places the first one large.
- Take colors from the photos. Colors that already live in your images sit together better than ones picked separately. From the six, settle on three: background, text and accent.
- Three keywords at most. Write adjectives or scenes: “quiet”, “handmade”, “early morning”.
Examples by use
Brand and logo: shop photos, packaging, signs you like, and images of the feeling you want; extract the colors and send the sheet to your designer. Interior: flooring, lighting and furniture on one board to see whether they agree. Film and photo: reference frames with similar light, color and framing for the crew. Wedding and events: flowers, tables and dresses with swatches, in one sheet for vendors. Vision board: photos and a one-line goal on a 9:16 board to use as a phone wallpaper.
Choosing a board ratio
Use 16:9 for slides and screen sharing, 4:5 or 1:1 for an Instagram feed, 9:16 for phone wallpapers and stories, and A4 landscape for print. Changing the ratio disturbs the layout, so tap “Justified rows” again afterwards.
Storage and privacy
Your images are not sent to a server. Arranging, color extraction and PNG export all run in this browser, and the board you are working on is kept in this browser's storage so you can continue later. “Clear all” also deletes the stored images. On a shared computer, clear the board when you are done.
Good to know
- Photos longer than 2,000 pixels on a side are stored at a reduced size to save space. That is still enough for the exported PNG.
- A moodboard built from other people's photos is material for internal discussion. Publishing it in an ad or on a sales page needs the owners' permission.
- There is no sync between devices. Save the PNG and send that.
FAQ
Do I need an account or an install?
No. Open the page and start; there is no account.
Are my photos uploaded anywhere?
No. Photos are not sent to a server. They stay in this browser's storage, and “Clear all” deletes them.
Is it free? Is there a watermark?
It is free and the exported PNG has no watermark. The site is supported by on-page ads.
What size should a moodboard be?
Match where it will be used: 16:9 for slides, 4:5 or 1:1 for an Instagram feed, 9:16 for a phone wallpaper, A4 landscape for print. Exports are 2,400 pixels on the long side.
What is the difference between a moodboard and a collage?
A collage is a finished picture. A moodboard collects photos, colors and keywords on one sheet to settle a direction.
Does it work on a phone?
Yes. Drag photos with a finger, drag the dot at the bottom right to resize, and double-tap text to edit it.
Can I use images from Pinterest?
Save or copy the image and paste it in. A board made from other people's photos is for internal reference; publishing it or using it commercially needs the owners' permission.
